Extensions of Time To File
You might be able to get an extension of time to file your Federal tax return. However, special rules apply for those who were outside the United States, or serving in a combat zone.
Automatic Extension
If you can’t file your 2011 tax return by the due date, you may be able to get an automatic 6-month extension of time to file. For example, if your return is due on April 17, 2012, you will have until October 15, 2012, to file.
If you don’t pay the tax due by the regular due date (generally, April 15), you’ll owe interest. You may also be charged penalties, discussed later… Click the following link to file an File IRS Tax Extension Online
